INVEST IN JEANS
Firstly, I won’t tell you to do this much because I am a bargain shopper, but I would certainly invest in one or two pairs of pregnancy jeans. Don’t go crazy – Gap or ASOS Maternity normally has some options for $20-$30 each. Me personally, I prefer the ones with the “over the belly” “full panel” band instead of the jeans that sit below the bump. I find that the pants that fit under the belly tend to be uncomfortable. Over the belly – oh so comfortable! But here is the trick – it’s all about fit. When trying them on, move around a bit. If they aren’t the right size in your waist, you will be trying to hoist them up all day. Most maternity jeans have faux pockets so you have to pull from the top and it’s a total pain. So, get one or two pair, get the right fit and don’t break the bank but certainly invest!
SIDENOTE: GAP Maternity is being discontinued in the stores right now. I just went and got two pairs of jeans, a dress and a shirt for $30.00! Told you I like bargain shopping!
LEGGINGS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND
Leggings are my best friend. I wear them almost every day. This is another item you will need to try on and move-in. We want them to last through most of your pregnancy so you need to find the perfect fit. My favorites are actually more like thick tights. Yes, around the toe, all the way to my breasts… and they are wonderful! DO NOT get the maternity leggings that feel silky smooth and look nice from the outside with a lining. Although the lining is nice (especially because it makes them thick and you can’t see through them), something about the mix of fabrics will not stay up! You want ones that are mostly spandex and tight.
TRICK: This works with your pre-pregnancy leggings – Since my bump is now bigger than my butt, and my leggings don’t have tags – turn them around! I find that the design works wonderfully for what was a bigger portion of your body in the back – now for the front!
DRESSES ARE EASY
Dresses are easy. I have a few empire-waist cotton dresses from before pregnancy and they still work because under my breasts, they just flow. Super comfortable, easy and trendy! For the fitted dresses that really show off your bump, I love Target’s maternity line! I bought the cutest three-quarter grey heathered dress for $12.00 and I have been wearing it regularly. Be prepared – those tight dresses for the bump will definitely turn some heads! Especially with a growing babies bump as opposed to (single) baby bump! Don’t forget about maxi-dresses either. I have had some difficulty here only because with a growing bump, the dresses get shorter. Keep this in mind if you plan on tailoring anything - Long dresses will get shorter as the bump gets bigger! The best buys in dresses: Shift Dresses, Wrap Dresses, Empire Waist, and Maxi.
I would recommend a few fitted dresses. Some feel a little uncomfortable, but I am proud of my bump and I think it looks so cute in something fitted – I bet yours does too. I bought a black “tank top” maternity dress from Old Navy that is a staple in my collection. It’s not quite warm enough in Ohio yet, but I suspect I will wear this more than any other maternity item in the summer. Enjoy that bump! Show it off!
THROW ON A JACKET
Jacket’s make any outfit cool. I am convinced. I use all my jackets from pre-pregnancy (denim jacket, blazers, etc.) and any outfit that I feel “eh” about, I instantly feel better with a jacket over top. Take that heathered dress mentioned above – throw a denim jacket over top, cute sandals, oversized Kate Spade bag and Ray Ban’s and I am out the door feeling great.
I once heard that if you are wearing flowy on bottom, always where tight on top – and vice versa. With a baby bump, I find that adding a chucky necklace or thick scarf compliments that baby bump like the flowy/tight rule. I don’t know – thick in the middle, skinny at the waist, thick on top? You be the judge, but this works for me! And don’t forget about jewelry. I love my Alex & Ani bracelets, Bourbon and Bowtie bangles, Michael Kors watch, Tiffany earrings and some of your other “go-to” items. (Side Note: I love Stella & Dot Jewelry. I think they make great statement pieces without breaking the bank.) I like to make sure I am wearing my watch or earrings because even if my outfit is a little lame, the jewelry, in my opinion, adds a piece of finish to any outfit.
Well, this is not my strong suit in the sense that I just can’t grasp the sense of having a ton of shoes… I know, how “un-feminine” of me. Dresses? Got it – closet stuffed. Jewelry? Nailed – anything, any tone, ready to go. Purses? My true love – NO ONE does it better. But shoes… I’ve never been a huge fan of going crazy here. I think having great, investment pairs of shoes is the best way to go. So, I may not be the best person to ask, but here is my advice (and really this is for anyone, not just moms of multiples): versatility! Here’s what I think you’ll need:
A great pair of sneakers that are trendy. Nike will do the job. Get a low profile, supportive, comfortable shoe that you can throw on with a pair of jeans and get out the door (no socks – if you do wear socks, make sure no one can see them).
In the fall/winter, get a great pair of boots. One of my best friends introduced me to the Frye Melissa Button boots and although extremely pricey, they will last a lifetime. Worth the investment.
Sandals and flats are difficult. I will often sacrifice the supportiveness and wear flats all day and notice my back and hips hurting in the evening. Right now, this is worth it to me. I kick my feet up when I get home and everything seems fine.
Heels are a pregnant woman’s best friend – kinda. Firstly, they totally elongate the body making your baby (or babies) bump look adorable. Although flattering, however, the heels can be hard to walk in. I am not wearing heels, but I praise any pregnant woman that does!
TOP IT OFF
My favorite type of pregnancy top is one thing: long. I mentioned that I love my leggings – long tops (fitted or not) work great for over my leggings to cover my growing bump and my butt. Length is the key with any top being worn for maternity.
WHERE TO SHOP
Last thing I will mention about maternity shopping is – where to shop!
My favorite maternity stores have been the following:
Old Navy – Some locations have special maternity sections, which is what you’ll want. If not, online!
Gap – Discontinuing their line in stores – so get it before it’s gone. If not, online!
Target – Don’t forget the sale rack. Also, I have found some large and extra-large things on sale for non-pregnant women that work great for the babies bump!
ASOS Maternity – Online. Look for their “outlet” section and sales. I bought a great dress for about $20 for a special occasion.
My other favorite shopping spot: POSHMARK. If you don’t have Poshmark, I highly recommend it – in fact, if you sign up using a code from a current user on your SMARTPHONE (the easiest way to shop this site, in my opinion), you will get $10.00 off your first purchase! If interested, I will happily give you my Poshmark code in the comments!
Happy shopping & dressing your Baby (or BABIES) Bump!
